否定を表す接辞
in-, un-, dis-, non-, -less

英語の否定は一般に not, no などの否定語を用いる。しかし否定は、否定を表す接辞でも表現できる。たとえば、「私は幸福でない」という否定表現は、I am not happy. だが I am unhappy. でも表現できる。ここでは否定を表す接頭辞と接尾辞について検討する。

否定を表す接頭辞(in-, un-, dis-, non-)
接頭辞(in-, un-, dis-, non-)は否定を表わす。つまり in-, un-, dis-, non- はいずれも not を意味し、日本語の「不」「非」「~ない」に相当する。このうち in- は、後続する語の頭文字に応じて、im-, il-, ir- にそれぞれ変化するが、これは単に発音上のことで意味は変わらない(in- = im-, il-, ir-)。

たとえば、in- は p, b, m の前では im- に変化するが、その理由を発音のメカニズムから説明する。

in- + patient(我慢強い)→ in-patient → im-patient → impatient(我慢できない)

[n] は口を少し開けて発音するが、[p], [b], [m] はいずれも唇を閉じて発音するので、in-patient をすばやく発音すると自然に im-patient となるという次第。これは日本語の「心配」「新聞」「新米」でも、shin-pai, shin-bun, shin-mai が実際には、shin はすべて shim になるのと同じことである。

in- : in(不) + accurate(正確な) = inaccurate(不正確な)
inadequate(不十分な), incapable(できない), inefficient(非能率的な)

The book is both inaccurate and exaggerated. その本は不正確かつ誇張されている。
The food supplies are still inadequate. 食糧の供給はまだ不十分だ。
He was incapable of realizing the situation. 彼は事態を認識することができなかった。
The delivery system was very inefficient. その配送システムはとても非能率的だった。

im- : in- は b, m, p の前では im- に変化する。
im- : imbalance(不均衡), immature(未熟の), impossible(不可能な)

Citizens are impatient with the slow pace of reform.
市民は改革がなかなか進まないことにいらいらしている。

The fruit was still immature. そのフルーツはまだ熟していなかった。
It's impossible to predict the future. 将来を予測することは不可能だ。

il- : in- は l の前では il- に変化する。
il- : illegal(不法の), illogical(不合理な), illiterate(読み書きのできない)

It's illegal to sell alcohol to children. 子供に酒類を売るのは違法である。
She has an illogical fear of insects. 彼女は昆虫に不合理な恐れを抱いている。
His parents were illiterate. 彼の両親は読み書きができない。

ir- : in- は r の前では ir- に変化する。
ir- : irregular(不規則な), irrational(不合理な), irreversible(不可逆的な)

She has been working irregular hours. 彼女の勤務時間は不規則です。
He had an irrational fear of cats. 彼は猫にばかげた恐れを抱いていた。

un- : un(不) + healthy(健康な) = unhealthy(不健康な)
unstable(不安定な), unfair(不公平な), unreasonable(不合理な)

They looked poor and unhealthy. 彼らは貧しくて不健康に見えた。
The economy is still unstable. 経済はまだ不安定である。
Life seems so unfair sometimes. 人生はたまに、とても不公平に思えるときがある。
Don't be unreasonable. むちゃを言うなよ。

dis- : dis(不) + honest(正直な) = dishonest(不正直な)
disagree(合意しない), distrust(信用しない), dislike(好きでない)

She gave dishonest answers to our questions. 彼女は私たちの質問に正直に答えなかった。
The conclusions disagree with the facts. その結論は事実と一致しない。
He generally distrusts doctors. 彼はたいてい医者を信用していない。
I dislike big cities. 大都会は好きでない。

non- : non(非) + cooperation(協力) = noncooperation(非協力)
nondestructive(非破壊の), nonessential(非本質的な), nongovernmental(非政府の)

a policy of nonviolent noncooperation 非暴力・非協力の政策
We are giving a nondestructive test soon. わが社では近日中に非破壊検査を実施します。
Let’s keep nonessential purchases to a minimum. 不要不急の買い物は極力控えましょう。
a nongovernmental organization 非政府組織(略 NGO)

否定を表す接尾辞(-less)
接尾辞(-less)は「ない」という意味を表す。

-less : care(注意) + -less(ない) = careless(注意が足りない)

sugar 砂糖 → sugarless 砂糖の入っていない
stain さび → stainless さびない(ステンレス・スチール製の)
end 終わり → endless 終わりのない
home 住む家 → homeless 住む家のない
hope 希望 → hopeless 絶望的な(望みのない)

Don't be careless in crossing the street. 道路を横切るときはよく注意しなさい。
= Be careful when crossing the street.
I like sugarless gum. 私はシュガーレスガムが好きです。
It is made of stainless steel. それはステンレス製です。
I have an endless curiosity about the world. 世間に対して飽くなき好奇心がある。
I think that’s a homeless dog. あれは野良犬だと思う。
The situation seems hopeless of improvement. 事態は好転の見込みがなさそうだ。
