関係副詞
関係副詞には where, when, why, how がある

関係副詞は、関係代名詞と同様に、名詞(=先行詞)の後に置かれ、その名詞を修飾する節(=関係節)を作る。たとえば、the house where I live 「私が住んでいる家」の場合、house が先行詞で、where が関係副詞、where I live が関係節である。

関係副詞には where, when, why, how の 4 種類がある。先行詞が場所の場合は where, 日時の場合は when, 理由の場合は why, 方法の場合は how というように使い分ける。本来、where は「どこに」、when は「いつ」、why は「なぜ」、how 「どのように」を意味する疑問副詞だが、これらの単語がいったん関係副詞として使われると、もとの意味は消失し、まったく異なる用法や機能を持つようになる。

関係副詞を含む構文は「先行詞」+「関係節」という語順となる。関係節は関係詞で始まる。以下の例文の下線部は関係節(relative clause)を表す。関係副詞は(前置詞+which)に置き換えることができる。

where (= in which, to which) 先行詞が場所の場合

This is the house where I live. ここが私の住んでいる家です。
= This is the house in which I live.
That is the country where I went last year. そこが私が去年行った国です。
= That is the country to which I went last year.
This is the place where the accident happened. ここが事故が起きた現場です。
Is there a shop near here where I can buy postcards? この辺に葉書を買える店がありますか。

when (= in which, at which, on which) 先行詞が日時の場合

1950 is the year when I was born. 1950年は私の生れた年です。
= 1950 is the year in which I was born.
It was a time when motorcars were rare. その頃は自動車の珍しい時代だった。
Sunday is the only day when I can relax. 日曜日は私がリラックスできる唯一の日です。
The time will come when you will regret it. これは後で後悔することになりますよ。

why (= for which) 先行詞が理由(reason)の場合

This is the reason why I am leaving. 私が辞めるのはそういうわけです。
= This is the reason for which I am leaving.
The reason why he came so early is unknown. 彼がそんなに早く来た理由は不明です。
Let me tell you the reason why I disagree. 私が反対する理由を言わせてください。
Tell me the reason why you are quitting your job. 仕事をやめる理由を話してください。

how (= the way in which)  先行詞が方法の場合(ただし how は先行詞を含む)
the way + how … となることは現在ではまれで、how か the way のどちらか 1 つでよい。

That is how they do business. それが彼らのビジネスのやり方だ。
= That is the way they do business.
= That is the way in which they do business.
Be careful how you act. 立ち居振る舞いに気をつけなさい。
Just tell me how the story ends. ストリーはどのように終わるのか教えてくれ。
We asked how we could help. 私たちはどのような形でお手伝いできるのか尋ねた。
Do you have any idea how he broke his leg? 彼がどのように骨折したのか知っていますか。
